About Primary Politics and Society enrichment in Ireland
Politics and Society is a Leaving Certificate subject, not a primary one. Primary pupils meet related ideas through SPHE and SESE, and these sessions build on that for children who enjoy arguing about what is fair.
The material is rules, rights, fairness and how decisions get made - in a family, a classroom, a town and a country. Children have strong instincts about fairness and very little vocabulary for them, so most of the work is giving them language precise enough to make a real argument.
The transferable skill is holding a position and supporting it with a reason, then listening to a counter-argument without abandoning the point. That is worth as much in English and History as it is here.
