About Primary Chemistry enrichment in Ireland
Chemistry is not a primary school subject in Ireland. Materials and their properties are covered within SESE Science, and chemistry only becomes a distinct subject at second level. These sessions are enrichment for children who like mixing, dissolving and finding out what things are made of.
Because there is no syllabus, sessions can be genuinely investigative: what dissolves and what does not, why ice melts, what happens when you heat sugar. Children draw conclusions from what they observe rather than being told the answer, which is the habit that makes second-level chemistry manageable.
The one idea we return to is that everything is made of particles too small to see. Children who get comfortable with that picture early find Junior Cycle Chemistry far less abstract than their classmates do.
