About Junior Cycle Chemistry tutoring in Ireland
There is no separate Junior Cycle subject called Chemistry. It is the Chemical World strand of Junior Cycle Science, taken by every student at Common Level, and these sessions concentrate on that strand.
Chemistry is where students are first asked to reason about something they cannot see. Everything - dissolving, reactions, the periodic table - depends on accepting that matter is made of particles, and students who never quite believe that struggle with everything built on top of it.
So we spend time on the particle picture before anything else, then use it to explain the reactions and equations the strand covers. It is slower at the start and considerably faster afterwards.

Is Chemistry a separate Junior Cycle subject?+
No - it is the Chemical World strand within Junior Cycle Science, taken by all students at Common Level. These sessions focus on that strand specifically.
My child finds the particle idea hard. Is that normal?+
Very. Chemistry asks students to picture something they cannot see, and it is the usual sticking point. We spend time building that mental picture before anything else.
Does it prepare for Leaving Cert Chemistry?+
Yes. The atomic structure and reaction work here is exactly what Fifth Year Chemistry builds on.
Why does my child find chemistry harder than biology?+
Because it is more abstract. Biology can largely be pictured; chemistry asks students to reason about invisible particles, which is a genuine step up in difficulty at this age.
Do we need equipment at home?+
No. Demonstrations and simulations cover what is needed, and anything hands-on uses ordinary household materials.
Does it prepare for Leaving Cert Chemistry?+
Yes. Atomic structure, bonding and reaction types all reappear in Fifth Year, so a solid strand here is a real advantage.
