About Primary French tutoring in Ireland
Modern foreign languages are not a core part of the Primary School Curriculum for every pupil in Ireland, though some schools offer them. These sessions are enrichment, and primary age is the best time to start: pronunciation and confidence are far easier to acquire before self-consciousness sets in.
Sessions are spoken and playful rather than written and formal. Children meet French through songs, games, stories and conversation about things they care about - family, food, animals, school - so the language attaches to meaning rather than to a vocabulary list.
Reading and writing come later and gradually, once listening and speaking are comfortable. Children who start French at primary level typically arrive at Junior Cycle already able to hear the sounds and hold a short conversation, which is a substantial head start.
